Elizabeth and I are home now (Oct 14) after a weeklong trip that took us to Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.  We had a great time overall, but no thanks to the weather.

You know that our two homes are in Arizona and Hawaii, both sunshine states. So you can imagine how glad we were to be back home after a week in which we did not see sun “at all, at all!” (as the Irish say when they mean business).

We saw the sunset on Oct 8 as we landed in Dayton, Ohio. And that was it for sunshine until we landed in Phoenix today, Oct 14. So our trip was like a weeklong “solar eclipse”. 🙂

The fact that we had a great trip despite that is proof that one’s happiness does not depend on external factors.

Check out these scenes taken inside Jungle Jim’s store in Cincinnati, near my daughter’s home. We spent nearly three hours there, laughing and dancing at times as well as playing games. And buying up some pretty exotic items from countries far away.

Seeing my new granddaughter for the first time was the primary reason for this trip. Allison was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to my younger daughter and her husband of 12 years on May 19, while Elizabeth and I were in Europe.

IMG_4162Since the new parents value their and the baby’s privacy, Bob 10-10-14the family part of the visit shall remain off limits in this travelogue. The only thing I will publish as part of it are these the two photos you see here of yours truly. The portrait (right) is a cropped detail of the picture in which I am holding my new granddaughter. She is looking straight at the camera with her eyes wide open. Learning to pose for photo-ops already, I can see… 🙂

Both my daughter and her husband are graduates of Miami University. That’s where they met while working as RA’s in during my daughter’s junior year in college.  They were married three years later.

Mike Armstrong plaque                                              Mike Armstrong is a former AT&T chairman & CEO, and a former IBM vice chairman. He is also the former CEO of Hughes Electronics, and Comcast Corporation.

Do you know where Miami U is? No, it is not in Florida. It is on the outskirts of Cincinnati. In fact, this is one of the oldest universities in this country. And it is based in the town of Oxford. Not England obviously. 🙂

I still remember the slogan I saw when I first came to visit its beautiful Georgian-style campus in 1996, the year my daughter was accepted there.

“Miami was a university before Florida was a state” (1809)

That slogan says it all, doesn’t it?

For those of you who may not be familiar with Ohio history, Miami is an Indian tribe. There is also a river named Miami near the university.

And now, here are some picture we took on the Miami campus.

And that’s all she wrote from Ohio…
