Day 6, Jan 4, 2018 – ANOTHER GREAT DAY CAPPED BY HALEAKALA SUNSET
JUST IN TIME FOR HALEAKALA SUNSET
Preceded by a fun reunion luncheon for Elizabeth, and a relaxing massage for both of us
Today was another great day on Maui. After our morning walk on the beach, Elizabeth drove by herself into Kahului to have lunch with a couple of her friends from her Kaunoa art classes.
They then went to visit 5 or 6 other ladies who were in Elizabeth’s hula class. She said everybody was so happy to see her that it felt like a class reunion.
In late afternoon, we had set up a couples massage for both of us at the Makawao Massage School. It was very relaxing.
By the time we were finished, we had to hustle up the 10,000 ft Haleakala mountain if were to catch the sunset, which we knew would be around 6 PM.
The last time we were up at the Haleakala Summit was on June 30, 2014, the last day for my company’s business after 36-years in business (see https://wp.me/p3R16m-12o)
Back to Jan 4, 2018, made it to the top of Haleakala with just 10 minutes to spare. Which was more than enough for a grand solar spectacle. it was perfect timing for a perfect sunset.
Take a look first at these two panorama shots…
The start – we arrived at the summit at 5:49 PM. The sunset was at 6:00 PM here, 5:57 PM at sea level.
It was not as cold as we expected – 52 F. We were prepared for much colder temps, as you can see.
And now, here is the grand finale. These were the last rays of the sun at the summit on this day, Jan 4.
By the way, do you know what Haleakala means in Hawaiian?
Home of the Sun.
Now you can see why. Very apt, isn’t it?
Overall, this was my #1 experience of the whole trip – ✮✮✮✮✮ (Bob)
