PACHELBEL STRING QUARTET PLAYED MY PHONE RINGTONE – CANON IN D!

Getting into the swim of things in Belgrade

I feel as if I am slurping Belgrade like a kid with an ice cream cone. In return, my hometown is licking me back like a puppy welcoming its master back home. Today was a good example of both.

This morning, I took one more step toward becoming domesticated in Belgrade. 😀 For just $28/mth, I signed up to swim laps at a wonderful Tašmajdan aquatic center with several Olympic size pools. between 6-9 or 12-18 hr every weekday.

The place is a short 15 minute-walk from my home. So I will get a little walking exercise in addition to swimming. Plus, I have to walk literally through the Palilula farmer’s market to get to the swimming pools. Which means I can pick up my daily supplies on the way back. Perfection 101! 🙂

Walk through Knez Mihajlova Street

A walk through Belgrade’s most fashionable street, Knez Mihajlova, yielded a couple of more gems of experiences. First, I chuckled at this Waikiki store in Belgrade. “A long way from Honolulu,” I thought. I also liked that restaurant with pink umbrellas as decoration.

On my way back, I noticed a Telenor mobile phone store sign. A friend of mine had told me that they also run a bank which is fully automated for web use. So I walked in to see what would take to open a bank account in local as well foreign currencies.

It was a cinch. Within 20 minutes,  I walked out with all paperwork completed, and had even logged into my new online accounts.

As I walked out, my phone rang. I have used for years Pachelbel’s Canon in D as my ringtone. But was I was about to answer the call, like an echo, I heard another Pachelbel Canon in D sound. It was a string quartet playing the same tune at the same time as my phone was ringing it!

How’s that for synchronicity and serendipity?!

When I finished my call, I walked out to where the all-girls string quartet was playing and recorded the last part of the Canon in D.

When the young ladies finished, I told them about my confusion between their music and my ringtone. They smiled shyly. Guess they aren’t used to people actually talking to them. They did say ‘thank you,’ though, when I gave the a donation.

Their next piece was another example of synchronicity and serendipity. It was Vivaldi’s La Primavera (Spring), the music I have recorded a number times with different orchestral arrangements. Here’s the Belgrade street string quarter version:

On my walk back home, I was thinking that opening line:

I feel as if I am slurping Belgrade like a kid with an ice cream cone. In return, my hometown is licking me back like a puppy welcoming its master back home. Today was a good example of both.

I loved these musical surprises. Thank you my spirit guides! 🙂

UPDATE JULY 9, 2018

FIRST SWIM, DELIGHTFUL FRUITY BREAKFAST

This morning around 7:00, I did my first walk-swim-walk. It was great. I only did 500m in the pool to start with. After about a week, I will start to add distance.

I felt wonderfully walking back and buying some fruit at the Palilula farmerl’s market. My fridge now looks like a fruit store and the kitchen table like a nut shop. 🙂

I have already had my fruit and coffee, and now I will start on the “kifla” – that crescent shaped pastry – and “kajmak” (Serbian equivalent of Devon clotted cream). Yum! 🙂

I am so excited: my new piano arrives this afternoon! Yeah!

Have a nice day!

My new piano arrived at my apartment this afternoon. And I let my nephew Stasa have the honors of choosing what the first sounds should be. He chose two Chopin waltzes – in C# minor and Grand Valse Brilante.
