DAY 5: A HALF-HOUR DRIVE BACK 50 YEARS

AUGUST 18, 2018

REVISITING YOUTHFUL MEMORIES OF BADEN

Fifty years ago, I was spending my second summer in Switzerland working as an intern in the engineering bureau of AG Columbus in Baden (see 1968: THE SUMMER OF LOVE AND WAR”).  Today, on my way back to Zurich from Rorschach, I decided to head north and revisit the place which left an important imprint on my life.

And this is what I saw…

As I walked through the park that leads to the building where I used to work, I was amazed to see a banana grove – in Switzerland! It’s funny that 50 years ago I never noticed the beautiful large Redwoods that were also in the park.

Baden is a quaint old town which did not change much in 50 years. But I walk through the city made me actually a little depressed. Because as I was seeing all these people spending their weekends in shops and cafes with kids in tow, I could also see my life that could have been. And I did not like what I was seeing. One needed no better reconfirmation that the choices I made in my youth were the right ones for me.

AT A ZURICH AIRPORT LOUNGE

This is where I spent the last few hours of this trip writing this last travelogue.

THE END
